Surat Diamond Bourse

The Surat Diamond Bourse reached an important milestone on February 18, 2026, as around 100 traders officially started business activities from the complex. This step is seen as a major move toward making the world’s largest office building fully active for diamond trade. The beginning of operations marks a new phase for Surat’s global diamond industry, which is gradually shifting to the modern infrastructure developed in DREAM City.

Key Highlights of the Expansion

Several developments were noted as traders moved into the bourse and began daily work.

  • Leading diamond merchants joined first. About 35 well known traders from traditional markets such as Mahidharpura and Varachha opened their permanent offices inside the complex.
  • Participation of small traders and brokers was also significant. Nearly 65 small scale traders and brokers started operations from specially designed co working cabins within the bourse.
  • A rapid rise in operational offices has been observed. With the latest shift, the number of functional offices has increased to around 175, compared to fewer than 50 only a few months earlier.
  • The collective decision by industry bodies played a key role. The coordinated move was supported by the Surat Diamond Traders Association, which selected February 18 as a common start date to build a smooth trading environment from the beginning.

Why This Development Matters

Industry leaders believe this step shows unity within Surat’s diamond sector and signals a long term transition toward organised and modern trade facilities. According to SDB Vice President Laljibhai Patel, the shift will help move business away from crowded traditional markets into a planned commercial ecosystem. The DREAM City setup also includes a dedicated customs clearance facility, which is expected to make international diamond exports faster and more efficient.

What It Means for Surat’s Diamond Industry

The gradual movement of traders to the Surat Diamond Bourse is likely to bring several benefits:

  • Improve working conditions and infrastructure for diamond businesses
  • Increase transparency and organised trading practices
  • Strengthen Surat’s position in the global diamond market
  • Create a more efficient environment for exports through dedicated customs facilities

As more offices become active in the coming months, the bourse is expected to turn into the main hub for diamond business in the city.
