Surat Recognised as Major Global Trade Hub

As of February 21, 2026, fresh trade data has highlighted Surat’s growing position as an important global export center. The city has recorded a strong export performance in the financial year 2024 25, strengthening its reputation in international markets. Surat, already known for diamonds and textiles, is now expanding its presence across multiple export sectors.

Key Export Figures for FY 2024 25

Total Export Value: Surat recorded total exports worth approximately $10.55 billion, which is around ₹95,710 crore. This marks a significant contribution to Gujarat’s overall export performance.

Top Trading Partners: The city continues to maintain strong trade relationships with several major economies. The United States accounts for nearly 32 percent of total exports. Hong Kong holds around 18 percent share. The United Arab Emirates contributes about 14 percent share. These markets remain crucial for Surat’s diamond, jewellery, and textile shipments.

Dominance of Gems and Jewellery Sector

The gems and jewellery industry continues to lead Surat’s export basket. Nearly 70 percent of the city’s total exports come from this sector. Surat is widely known for diamond processing and polishing. A major portion of the world’s diamonds are processed in the city before being exported to global markets.

Growth Beyond Traditional Sectors

While diamonds and textiles remain strong pillars, Surat is also seeing growth in other industries.

  • Emerging Export Sectors: Technical textiles and man made fibres are gaining traction. Organic chemicals and pharmaceutical products are showing steady growth. Mechanical machinery and engineering goods are also contributing to the export basket.

This diversification is helping the city reduce dependence on a single sector and build a more balanced export base.

Future Outlook for Trade Growth

To maintain this momentum, the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference – South Gujarat is scheduled to take place in Surat in April 2026.

The conference aims to:

  • Connect local MSMEs with international buyers
  • Promote exports under the Local for Global vision
  • Support businesses in exploring new trade agreements

Industry experts believe that if current growth continues, Surat could further strengthen its position as one of India’s leading export cities.

Why This Matters for Gujarat

Surat’s export growth means more employment opportunities, stronger foreign exchange earnings, expansion of industrial activities, and greater global recognition for Gujarat. With steady diversification and policy support, the city’s trade journey is expected to remain positive in the coming years.
