Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has been discharged from a New Delhi hospital following treatment for a severe stomach infection and dehydration, but his availability for the marquee India Pakistan T20 World Cup match on February 15 remains uncertain.
Recovery and Current Status
Sharma was admitted on February 11 and released the same day after receiving treatment for acute gastroenteritis. He subsequently missed India’s group stage match against Namibia on February 12. As of February 14, the 24 year old has traveled with the Indian squad to Colombo, Sri Lanka, where the high stakes encounter will be played.
However, sources indicate Sharma lost approximately 2 kilograms during his illness, and team management is proceeding cautiously. Captain Suryakumar Yadav has suggested the opener may need additional recovery time, with a final decision dependent on medical clearance ahead of the match.
India’s Dominant Performance Against Namibia
In Sharma’s absence, India delivered a commanding performance at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Batting first, India posted 209 for 9 in 20 overs, powered by a blistering 52 off 28 balls from Hardik Pandya. In response, Namibia was bundled out for 116 in 18.2 overs, handing India a comprehensive 93 run victory.
Sanju Samson, who replaced Sharma in the playing eleven, contributed to the strong team effort. Hardik Pandya was named Player of the Match for his all round contribution of 52 runs and 2 wickets for 21 runs.
What Lies Ahead
With the India Pakistan match scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, all eyes remain on the team’s medical updates. If Sharma is deemed unfit, Samson is expected to continue as his replacement at the top of the order.
India’s commanding win against Namibia has boosted team morale, but the fitness of a key opener adds an element of suspense ahead of cricket’s biggest rivalry.
